Furry Desk Accessory

The reason I don't blog as much as I should is I have a 20-lb. Maine Coon who thinks he's a desk accessory. Problem is, a fully extended Coonie makes it difficult to operate the mouse or reach the keyboard. And when that Coonie constantly pokes my forearm with his paw and butts his head against my elbow, typing becomes darn near impossible.

So meet another member of the staff, Dougall. He's the office assistant here at Catz 'n' Ratz. Loves to have his face rubbed, hates to have his feet washed. Hisses like a snake at the vacuum cleaner, even when it's not running.

Animal Charity of the Month

The good folks at the Fairfield Area Humane Society in Lancaster, Ohio, could use some help. Someone recently dumped a mixed-breed dog named Sugar there that has suffered such abuse that it can't open it's jaw. The Humane Society is trying to raise the $2,500 necessary for Sugar's surgery. Visit their Web site and read more about the good work they do and where you can send donations.

Catz 'n' Ratz Word of the Week

Ratpage: a form of rampage that takes place when a rat is upset at being returned to her cage after spending time outside. This involves frenzied running around the cage and brisk grooming of cage mates.

Ratsicles

A great ratty treat for a hot day is a "ratsicle." It's easy: buy a small bottle of baby food (fruit or vegetable flavor, low-sugar content), place a few dollops on cellophane or on a dish, and freeze until solid. Ratties love them!

Sally Salome Ratty Rat is devouring a banana/peach/oatmeal ratsicle in this photo. Yum!

Ta, Steve

I'm truly sad about the death of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin. He educated a generation of people worldwide about conservation and nature, and glorified animals that don't always make the "cute list." His enthusiasm was infectuous.

His life may be over, but I doubt that his influence is. I wonder how many children he inspired to become veterinarians and vet techs, zoologists, wildlife officers, and animal rehabilitators. I believe that the ripple effect of his life will continue for many years to come.

Ta, Steve. I know there was much excitement at the Rainbow Bridge when you showed up.
